Julius Aamisepp and the Potato variety “Jõgeva Yellow”

Estonian breeder Julius Aamisepp was an autodidact, i.e. self-taught in agronomy. He received the initial boost for plant breeding from an agricultural exhibition when he saw the difference between different varieties of potatoes.

The deep interest in plant breeding, which began with a visit to an agricultural exhibition, resulted in 43 new varieties of potatoes. Among them are both the first potato variety “Kalevipoeg” (1913) bred in Estonia and Estonia's most famous potato variety “Jõgeva Yellow” (1942). Besides potato breeding, Aamisepp also delved into the research and breeding of pea, fruit, vegetables and berry crops. In total, Julius Aamisepp has bred far more than 100 varieties of cultivars.
